“The flower, here, does not decorate. It persists.”

Jorge Luis Santos (Quivicán, Cuba, 1973) is a Cuban artist based in Miami. Working primarily through painting, his practice explores gesture, material, repetition, and the physical relationship between the body, the tool, and the canvas.
Since beginning his practice in 1994, Santos has developed a visual language in which unconventional tools—including his hands, shoe soles, and the mop—become extensions of the body. His paintings are built through pressure, dragging, impact, accumulation, and removal rather than through traditional representation.
In his recent flower paintings, the flower is not painted to imitate a flower. It emerges from the action of the tool itself. The resulting images move between abstraction and recognition, where color and physical gesture remain visible as evidence of the process.
His work has been presented in Cuba, the United States, and Europe and is held in private and institutional collections.
